TobyMac Releases First ‘Hope-Filled’ Single Since Son’s Tragic Death
Christian hip-hop singer Toby Mac’s newly released single “Help Is on the Way (Maybe Midnight)” reflects the hard lessons God has taught him in the wake of his 21-year-old firstborn son Truett’s tragic death in 2019.
Calling it his first song to “scream hope” and to mimic the upbeat, crowd-favorites many fans have come to associate with TobyMac’s sound, he says in an interview that it represents a turning point, both personally and as an artist.
“Help is On the Way (Maybe Midnight)” is the first time I think I felt sort of a turnaround where I could express hope. I felt hope through it all. But [the song] is the first time I could express it in an artistic, creative way. The first time I could scream hope from the mountaintop,” he says.
TobyMac credits the unexpected time at home during quarantine, and of course the work of the Holy Spirit in him, to his musical breakthrough, calling it a gift.
“It’s been a season of reflection,” he says. “The timing of everything—losing my son and then going into this season of being home a lot—it’s been really a gift to me. … So, I’m grateful.”
