Christian Conservative Rep. Mike Johnson Seizes Speaker’s Gavel
It has been contentious, infuriating and reminiscent of a circus at times, but the Republicans in the House of Representatives have finally agreed on a new Speaker of the House: Rep. Mike Johnson.
Johnson represents the 4th District of Louisiana and appears to have the support of many conservatives in Congress as well as the old guard, who held out against a newer member holding the gavel.
It has been just over three weeks since a small group of Republicans led by Rep. Matt Gaetz, Fla., sided with the Democrats in Congress to oust sitting Speaker, Rep. Kevin McCarthy, Calif.
During those three weeks, several high-ranking Republicans attempted to win the support of the majority party in Congress, such as Reps. Steve Scalise, La., and Jim Jordan, Ohio, but none were able to gain the majority votes needed.
As more people find out just who Johnson is, many Christians and conservatives are encouraged by some of his previous actions.
The first thing Johnson did following his selection by the Republican caucus was to lead the group in prayer. Certainly, dependence upon prayer is a good quality for the leader of the House of Representatives to have.
The first thing Speaker Designate Mike Johnson did last night was ask the Republican caucus to pray with him.

In response to their prayers, as all authority is given by the Lord (Rom. 13:1), God selected a man who sought the Lord to fill the position.
When all the votes were counted, Johnson won all available Republican votes, while House Democrats voted for Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, N.Y.
In January, @RepMikeJohnson joined me on the House floor while we were in a deadlock over who our next Speaker would be. We lifted up the speaker’s race to the Lord and asked for his divine guidance. Immediately after the prayer, 14 members changed their votes, ultimately leading… pic.twitter.com/14YnPeeRzJ

Congressman Greg Steube of Florida had this so say of Johnson:
“Mike Johnson is a strong conservative, but above all else, he is a strong Christian. He’s not afraid to look to his faith for guidance. America needs that more than ever in the U.S. House.” {eoa}
