Reliving ‘Judgment at Nuremberg’
The courtroom drama we saw in New York City last week was like reliving another drama: the movie “Judgment at Nuremberg.”
The movie took place during the trials of Nazi war criminals in the city of Nuremberg, Germany. Instead of focusing on the major Nazi figures like Goering, the movie followed the trial of a German judge. He was tried for convicting a Jew on false charges early in the Nazi regime to curry favor with the Nazis. After allowing this perversion of justice, the judge was promoted, and no German was safe from Nazi prosecution.
There have always been corrupt prosecutors who follow the Russian KGB philosophy of “show me the man, and I’ll show you the crime.” No one living under tyrants in Russia, China, Iran and many other countries is safe. In America, we had the Bill of Rights and freedom-loving Judges who would stop overreacting prosecutors.

Until now.
In New York, we saw a judge allow a trial of a political opponent based on a novel, twisted legal theory conflating a lawsuit settlement with a campaign contribution and bookkeeping errors. At the trial itself, the judge aided the prosecution and limited the defense. He showed bias in the jury selection and in his final instructions to the jury, all while this conviction helps his daughter as a Democratic Party operative.
If this verdict stands, a whole new world of political prosecution will be opened, and not just against Republicans. Some prosecutor is probably already thinking about ways to go at President Biden through his family’s foreign dealings or other matters such as squashing the Hunter Biden laptop story in 2020.
Before this, another New York judge took on a dubious prosecution accusing the same political opponent. The prosecutor claimed that a major bank was defrauded by false financial statements. Even after this bank testified that it was not defrauded, the Judge decided otherwise and levied a massive fine. You can expect other New York prosecutors to seize upon this case to extort funds from businesses and political enemies.
If you are thinking that this is only about Donald Trump, you should look at the continuing attacks on the Supreme Court from the authoritarian Left. Much was made of flags flown by Justice Samuel Alito’s wife, but the real issue is judicial independence. The Left wants to pack the Supreme Court with judges who will be subservient to them, just as the German judge was to the Nazis.
There are those who equate their political opponents with the devil and would knock down all of the legal protections he seems to hide behind. But then the devil will turn to attack you, and you will have no protection left.
Remember the judgment at Nuremberg, and pray for our Judges to have the courage to uphold the rule of law—no matter how unpopular the decision may be.
