Dockworkers’ Strike Suspended Until January
The dockworkers’ strike ended as workers reached a deal on wages.
“The International Longshoremen’s Association and the United States Maritime Alliance, Ltd. have reached a tentative agreement on wages and have agreed to extend the Master Contract until Jan. 15, 2025, to return to the bargaining table to negotiate all other outstanding issues,” the International Longshoremen’s Association and the United States Maritime Alliance said in a statement. “Effective immediately, all current job actions will cease and all work covered by the Master Contract will resume.”

A person familiar with the agreement told the Associated Press that wages have increased from 50% over six years to 62%. The agreement is tentative, according to the source.
The union went on strike Oct. 1, over automation and wage raises, demanding a 77% increase in pay.
“Panic buying” ensued following reports of the strike.
WPIX-TV anchor Dan Mannarino shared a video on X of Costco shoppers in a line around the building waiting to shop.
“At my local Costco to do my regular shopping and this is the line to get in,” he wrote. “I asked a few people what they are doing and they said bc of the dock workers strike they are stocking up.”
The New York Post shared a video of empty shelves, explaining that “shoppers on Staten Island were panic buying amid the ongoing dockworkers strike.”
