What Did the Benham Brothers Really Say to Make Right Wing Watch So Angry?
Flip It Forward, with twin brothers Jason and David Benham, hadn’t even premiered yet on HGTV, but that didn’t stop the network from booting the duo over a controversy that also hadn’t happened yet.
Why? Its seems HGTV was swayed by reports that the Benhams are “anti-gay, anti-choice extremists” as well as “anti-Muslim”—claims made by Right Wing Watch, a leftist group that characterizes itself as a media watchdog.
Jason Benham and David Benham are 1998 alumni of Liberty University who played for the Baltimore Orioles and Boston Red Sox, respectively. For years, they have also led a highly profitable real estate business on which the show was to be premised.
But all that has gone out the window now that their biblical orthodoxy has come to the light.
One of David Benham’s remarks, perhaps nothing new to the ears of most conservative Christians but incendiary for the left, was as follows:
“In the Leviticus passage above it says that death is the consequence for homosexual sin. This is how detestable this type of sin is to God. However, Jesus came and took the consequences of this sin upon Himself on the cross. Homosexual sin is covered by the blood of Jesus the same way stealing is. The only difference today is that homosexual sin carries with it an agenda, other sins do not. Homosexuality demands acceptance, and the blood of Jesus cannot forgive sins that are no longer sins. The blood of Jesus cleanses sin.”
