‘Young Pope’ Paints Pontiff as Jezebelic Antichrist

Jude Law is the 'Young Pope.'

HBO is taking sacrilegious to new lows with a new series that aims squarely at the Catholic Church. Although it’s clear that Jezebel’s perversions have swept through the religion—manifesting as child abuse and gay priests—The Young Pope is tasteless at best.

Indeed, the show paints the pontiff as a bisexual atheistic Antichrist character who’s hellbent on convincing the world, “I don’t have any sins to confess.” Many have fancied Pope Benedict and now Pope Francis as the Antichrist, but this takes satirical entertainment beyond the bounds of end-times conspiracies’ pontifications.

This young pope is portrayed as sexy and radical. At 40-something, he is not only the youngest pope in history, the series portends, he’s also the first American pope and intends to “wage a war without end” against those who come against him.

Here’s HBO’s description:

“From Paolo Sorrentino, director of the Academy Award-winning ‘The Great Beauty,’ ‘The Young Pope’ tells the controversial story of the beginning of Pius XIII’s pontificate. The 10-episode series stars Jude Law as the complex and conflicted Pius XIII, the first American pope. The cast includes Diane Keaton as Sister Mary, an American nun living in Vatican City, as well as Silvio Orlando, Scott Shepherd, Cécile de France, Javier Cámara, Ludivine Sagnier, Toni Bertorelli and James Cromwell.”

Sorrentino argues the series is about “the clear signs of God’s existence. The clear signs of God’s absence. How faith can be searched for and lost. The greatness of holiness, so great as to be unbearable when you are fighting temptations and when all you can do is to yield to them. The inner struggle between the huge responsibility of the Head of the Catholic Church and the miseries of the simple man that fate (or the Holy Spirit) chose as Pontiff. Finally, how to handle and manipulate power in a state whose dogma and moral imperative is the renunciation of power and selfless love towards one’s neighbor.”

Sorrentino has some interesting concepts about real struggles, but a cigarette-smoking hyper-sexual pope is more than sacrilegious. It’s just plain stupid, despite Variety‘s entertainment reporter insisting “there’s so much fun to be had” and “with proper media attention, HBO can expect a loyal audience.”

Let’s not just complain about this and other trash on TV. Let’s wage prophetic warfare over the entertainment mountain.

The Jezebel spirit has been making its mark on our airwaves—and in our movie theaters—long enough. Television and film producers have made billions of dollars selling sex on the small screen and the big screen, but intercession over the entertainment industry will bear fruit.

We must not sit idly by and let the prince of the power of the air run without restraint. Here are some prayer points for the entertainment mountain:

Pray God’s people currently working on the entertainment mountain will walk in a manner worthy of their calling and, in doing so, win lost souls to Christ.

Pray God will rescue people out of the devil’s grip and translate them into God’s loving hands.

Pray that God will bring new concepts with Christian messages that cross over into the secular arena.

Pray that God will break in with light to dispel the darkness.

Pray that God will guard young minds from the corruption in the entertainment realm.

Pray that God will raise up more intercessors in the entertainment field.

Let’s continue to barrage the entertainment mountain and believe for the glory of God to overtake the gross darkness.
