Can Generational Curses be Inherited?
One thing I must address is that a Christian cannot possess a demon.
The topic of deliverance has been misunderstood and strung into something that it is not, with generations of Christians hyper-spiritualizing everything and giving Satan more power than what he really possesses, diminishing the great authority and power of Christ, the only One who could ever overcome sin and death.
However, we need to acknowledge that the enemy can still affect our lives. The last couple of years there has been some scientific discoveries to verify that its genetically possible that people are “born this way” meaning born genetically predisposed toward a particular pattern of behavior that was inherited by a previous generation, in which they have no control over, especially within the science of gender identify.
When this news first hit, it was met with much skepticism by both the scientific community and the church. But in recent years, through more research, it has been scientifically proven that a person can indeed be “born this way,” my personal view has also evolved in the area according to the Bible verses below.
“Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me” (Ps. 51:5, KJV).
If a person is shaped in iniquity, then the question to ask is “where did those iniquities come from?” The text doesn’t say “I was shaped in sin” then it would readily mean the sin of Adam that was passed upon all who are born on this earth. But it says “iniquities.” This category of sin is a bit more personal.
Iniquity is personal transgression committed over long periods of time where a person has the potential to have their DNA altered towards a particular sin. They go from doing this sin to actually embodying it! it would make sense that under the right conditions a person can activate those iniquities. As I mentioned above, many scholars suggest and believe that David’s statement above was that of his past and how he was conceived.
This is the reason why when you visit a clinic for the first time, they make you fill out paperwork that consists of a series of questions asking you about your background. Why is this done? The doctor doesn’t want have to guess what’s wrong with you and to help better assess your current illness. He wants to see what genetic makeup is within your bloodline and which sicknesses have been frequent. The same could be said about sin and curses. Through discernment the Holy Spirit can show you which information is being transferred from one generation to the next.
“The LORD curses the HOUSE of the wicked, but he blesses the HOME of the upright” (Prov. 3:33 NLT).
A perfect example of potential epigenetic modification can be found in the life of John the Baptist and his parents Zechariah and Elizabeth. Luke 1 narrates the announcement of his birth by the angel Gabriel and the future and lifestyle John was to have. We find his mother already old in age and well beyond the age of childbearing, now with child she recluses herself away from public scrutiny for the whole term of her pregnancy, so much so that the angel Gabriel tells her cousin Mary (mother of Jesus) to go visit her to console her.
“Soon afterward his wife, Elizabeth, became pregnant and went into seclusion for five months” (Luke 1:24, NLT).
But it was too late. The damage had been done as we find that as Elizabeth struggled with isolation, we see her son John being isolated and in the wilderness during his earthly ministry.
“John grew up and became strong in spirit. And he lived in the wilderness until he began his public ministry to Israel” (Luke 1:80, NLT).
You find him secluded away from public in the desert, just like his mother. And it didn’t end there. We find another curse coming down the bloodline through his father Zechariah, dealing with doubt during his dialogue with the angel.
“Zechariah said to the angel, ‘How can I be sure this will happen? I’m an old man now, and my wife is also well along in years.’ Then the angel said, ‘I am Gabriel! I stand in the very presence of God. It was He who sent me to bring you this good news! But now, since you didn’t believe what I said, you will be silent and unable to speak until the child is born. For my words will certainly be fulfilled at the proper time'” (Luke 1:18-20, NLT).
We also find John doubting his proclamation that Jesus was the lamb of God.
“John the Baptist, who was in prison, heard about all the things the Messiah was doing. So he sent his disciples to ask Jesus, ‘Are you the Messiah we’ve been expecting, or should we keep looking for someone else?'” (Matt. 11:2-3, NLT).
We see the John unbelief was passed down to him by his father, Zechariah, and his isolated personality was passed down to him by his mother! {eoa}
