Controversial Religious Sect Mandating Masks for Worship
“All temple patrons and workers are asked to wear face masks at all times while in the temple.”
The Mormon church, also known as the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, has officially announced a change in policy regarding their COVID-19 policy.
The religious organization announced on Wednesday, September 22 that everyone who takes part in a service, their temples would required them to wear a mask in the attempt to stop the spread of the coronavirus among its worshipers.
The organization stated, “As cases of COVID-19 increase in many areas, we want to do everything possible to allow temples to remain open. Therefore, effective immediately, all temple patrons and workers are asked to wear face masks at all times while in the temple.”
The organization was also recently in the news for an agreement in which they will be paying the Boy Scouts of America over $1 billion in order to resolve sexual abuse claims.
The “church” has long been identified as a cult rather than a denomination by mainstream Protestant and Catholic church groups.
The main points of contention with the organization stems from their beliefs (among others) specifically regarding the divinity of Jesus Christ, the canon of Scripture and the nature of salvation. {eoa}
