‘Mary Mary’s’ Tina Campbell Says Faith Helped Her Forgive Cheating Husband
Mary Mary‘s Tina and Teddy Campbell had been married for a decade when his infidelity rocked her world.
The scorned singer realized at that point that her faith was not as realistic in practice as it was in theory.
“I said, ‘You know what, I’m going to get this thing right, I’m going to connect with my family,'” she tells talk show hosts Boris and Nicole. “I’m going to pray and make sure I’m centered and not just representing something that’s not what I internalize.”
She started a 40-day fast, and three days into the fast, she discovered her husband had been cheating on her.
The revelation rocked her world.
“I was utterly devastated,” Tina Campbell says. “I didn’t wanna try to connect and do the right thing and get connected to You, Lord, to find this out, like why now? Why not when I was acting crazy, why now when I’m trying to do the right thing?”
She says she initially lost her way and wanted to forget her faith, even to the point of pursuing vengeance, like shooting up Teddy’s car.
In the process of choosing anger over forgiveness, Tina Campbell says she became more and more miserable, and she told God, “Look, God, either you can help me or I’m gonna go crazy and do something crazy and embarrass You and everybody else.”
At her lowest point, she says she was ready to take lives away.
Teddy says he was afraid of Tina: her strength, her intellect, her words, her power.
“At the moment I did all this to her,” Teddy says of cheating, “I was like, OK, either I’m going to run like I normally do or I’m going to rise up.”
And that’s when God spoke to Tina: “Something inside me told me he is not what he did.”
She examined her heart and saw that if she was going to preach about faith, she had to put it into practice and forgive her husband.
