New TV Show ‘Preacher’ Claims Pastor Possessed by Offspring of Angel, Demon
The offspring of an angel and a demon enter the body of a pastor—what sounds like the beginning of a joke is the premise Preacher, a comic-turned-TV show.
“Preacher is a comic book about a preacher named Jesse, who is possessed by the offspring of an angel and demon called Genesis,” according to Gizmodo‘s Germain Lussler.
“Genesis gives Jesse the ability to make anyone do anything he says, but it also demolishes his faith. He then goes off on a quest, along with his criminal girlfriend Tulip and new best friend, a drunken Irish vampire named Cassidy, to literally find God. There’s Heaven, Hell, angels, demons, ultra violence,” Lussler writes.
The show, set to premiere in late May on AMC, stars Dominic Cooper, Tom Brooke and Ian Colletti among others. It’s produced by Sam Catlin and Seth Rogen.
Fans of the comic are clamoring for “controversial” religious themes to permeate the plot.
“To put it bluntly, there’s a whole mess featuring our blasphemous Preacher hero Jesse (Dominic Cooper), a deadbeat God gone missing, a cult obsessed with bringing on World War III and a few horrible angels to boot,” Zap2It’s Aaron Pruner writes.
But if vampires aren’t evil enough for you, producer Catlin says not to worry.
“I think we want to do it step by step,” Catlin said. “If we showed in the first episode DeBlanc and Fiore and Heaven and their floating space station with a hole in it… you need to ratchet these things up. I think the idea of the show is: oh, you’re okay with vampires now? Okay, what about this? What about this and this and this? It’s like putting a frog in a bowl of boiling water or something like that so that by the time you look upon Satan, you’re like, ‘Okay, yeah. That makes sense.'”
