Oprah’s Controversial ‘Belief’ Goes Step Further, Calls Islamic Jihad ‘Misunderstood’

Jihad—aka the term used when terrorists launch an attack—is a “misunderstood” term, according to a Southern California dean.

In the introduction for the Muslim section of Oprah Winfrey’s Belief, Varun Soni, dean of Religious Life at the University of Southern California says many have been interpreting the term jihad all wrong.

“Many people interpret (jihad) as a holy war, but there is nothing holy about war,” Soni says. “What jihad actually represents is an internal struggle in our own heart.”

He further states that jihad isn’t just a Muslim concept, but the reality of the human condition.
