‘Passion of the Christ 2’ Begins Filming This Summer: Here’s What We Know
More than two decades after the release of The Passion of the Christ, Mel Gibson is finally moving forward with the long-awaited sequel, and it’s sounding even more intense than fans imagined.
Titled ‘The Resurrection of the Christ,’ the film is set to begin filming in August 2025 at Rome’s legendary Cinecittà Studios. “The Resurrection” will also shoot in several ancient southern Italian towns, including Matera, which was also featured in the original film.
Jim Caviezel is expected to reprise his role as Jesus, with Maia Morgenstern returning as Mary and Francesco De Vito as Peter, based on listings from IMDb.

While many details have been kept under wraps over the years, Gibson recently opened up about the ambitious nature of the story. Speaking on The Joe Rogan Experience, he called the film “an acid trip,” saying, “I’ve never read anything like it.”
Co-written with Braveheart screenwriter Randall Wallace and Gibson’s brother, Donal Gibson, the sequel explores far more than just the Resurrection.
The storyline will cover “the fall of the angels to the death of the last apostle,” according to Gibson, who emphasized the supernatural scope of the film. “You need to go to hell. You need to go to Sheol,” he said, referring to the realm of the dead
In a 2022 interview, Gibson shared even more on the unique structure of the film: “It’s not a linear narrative,” he explained. “You have to juxtapose the central event that I’m trying to tell with everything else around it in the future, in the past and in other realms, and that’s kind of getting a little sci-fi out there.”
Despite its bold premise, production is now firmly set for summer 2025, with Cinecittà’s massive new Studio 22 serving as the main production hub.
After the original Passion of the Christ shocked Hollywood by grossing over $612 million worldwide and becoming the highest-grossing independent film of all time, expectations for the sequel are sky-high, and based on what Gibson’s saying, it could be one of the boldest biblical films ever made.
