Pastor: I Didn’t Believe in Gift of Tongues Until God Gave Me the Gift
When Pastor Kim Maas was 13, she was invited to someone’s church. In the middle of the service, a woman stood up and started speaking in tongues, which scared her, because she didn’t believe in that gift of the Spirit.
“I remember going home after that and asking my mom; my mom is so smart,” Maas says. “I asked my mom about it. I said, ‘Mom, what is this thing?’ She said, ‘Oh, I think that’s that thing called tongues.’ And I said, ‘Well, what is that? I’m sure that was from the devil.’ That’s what I told her: I’m sure that was from the devil, because I figured it was. I mean, it was so scary.
“She said, ‘Well, our church would say that it’s not real; it’s not from the Lord. But I’m not so sure about that. I think that we probably need to be open to it and see what we think the Lord feels about it.'”
Because Maas’ mother was open to it, that led her down a path where she eventually had someone pray for her to receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit, she says on the Move Forward podcast on the Charisma Podcast Network. After that experience, she says she received the gift of tongues and she’s been speaking in tongues ever since. She ended up quitting her nursing job to go into full-time ministry.
“Whatever opened up to me, whatever door opened up to me, I walked through it,” Maas says. “I said, ‘Yes.’ And that’s how it started. About a year later, Cindy Jacobs called me out of a large group of women at a conference and she confirmed publicly the call that was on my life. I had lots of amazing experiences during that time.”
