What would Jesus say about our politics today?

That’s one of the questions Pastor Robert Jeffress of First Baptist Church in Dallas, Texas, explored during a recent interview with CBN’s Faithwire.

During a conversation about his latest book, “18 Minutes with Jesus: Straight Talk from the Savior About the Things That Matter Most,” Jeffress spoke about the broken and tattered state of American culture, and how believers are, at least in part, to blame for the devolving moral chaos.

“Who expects unbelievers to do anything except act like unbelievers? I think it’s Christians who have refused to engage the culture that are responsible for what’s happened here,” he said. “Jesus hit cultural issues head-on in the Sermon on the Mount. … He said, ‘I have left you here to be salt. You are the salt of the earth.'”

Jeffress went on to explain how salt, in Jesus’ day, helped delay the decay of meat, thus giving it a longer shelf life. He said the same applies to what Christ calls Christians to do in our broken and tattered world.

“You’re to be a preservative, not to keep the world from collapsing; ultimately, it is going to collapse,” Jeffress said. “But give the world longer, so that people have the opportunity to hear the Good News of Jesus Christ.”
