Sci-Fi Friendly Church Invites Superheroes
I have always been engrossed by fantasy. I don’t just watch and read sci-fi and fantasy books, films, comics and television programs; I analyse them and theologise about them.
My library is full of books with titles like Holy Superheroes! Exploring the Sacred in Comics, Graphic Novels and Film. I’ve even had a chapter on “Good and Evil in the World of Supernatural” published in a collection of essays on the television show Supernatural, the popular series about Sam and Dean Winchester, two brothers who are bound by tragedy.
When comedian and television presenter Adam Hills suggested a church service at which the congregation dressed up, I thought about a church service that used the theological themes that are an important part of this genre as a way of worshipping God.
And so this weekend I’ll be leading a fantasy-and science fiction-friendly church service.
