‘We’re Here to Bring the Gospel’: Kanye West Performs Sunday Service Washington, DC

Famed rapper Kanye West brought the gospel to Washington, D.C., this weekend with his Sunday Service.

West performed at George Washington University in what the university called a “surprise show.”

During that performance, West gave his listeners a taste of Jesus Is King, according to TMZ. In between tracks, West talked to the audience.

“I want you to know I’m not here for your entertainment this afternoon,” he told the audience. “We’re here to spread the gospel. … Philippians 2—forgive me if I mispronounce anything. I’m a recent convert. It means I recently got saved within this year.

“… I know for a fact that I am a strong member in pop culture, that I worshipped the idea of labels, brand names. I worshipped cars. I worshipped the city I grew up in. I probably said Chicago more in my career than I said Jesus.”

Earlier that day, hundreds of students gathered at Howard University to hear West perform music from his upcoming album, Jesus Is King, according to The Washington Post.

A Facebook video of the event shows West performing “Fade” with new Christian lyrics:

“God, reveal the lies, let us stop feeling victimized, show my people the way, show my people how to love, forgive and pray,” said West, according to CBN News. “If you believe Jesus died for your sins—that’s the gospel! Christians, we’re making it too hard for people.” {eoa}
