Generational Curses

I want to talk to you about generational curses. There are a number of generational curses.

Divorce

You will see generational curses in families through things such as divorce. That needs to be stood against. Christie and me, on both sides of our family, there was divorce. And when we got married, we made a decision to say, “This will never become a subject that we’re going to discuss.” And I can tell you, in over 44 years, we have not discussed it. I’m not saying we’ve never had problems or challenges, but we have never entertained that it was an option.

One of the Keys…

When you go into the courts and you cut off that spirit of divorce, you need to understand that you’re coming out of agreement with it.

Other Types of Generational Curses

  • Dysfunctional relationships are a type of generational curse.
  • Cancers, such as breast cancer, and chronic illnesses are generational curses.
  • Poverty, the spirit of poverty, and the orphan spirit are types of generational curses.
  • Physical, sexual and emotional abuse are generational curses.
  • Addictions are a generational curse.
  • Emotional struggles such as oppression and depression are generational curses.
  • Miscarriages and infertility are types of generational curses.

If these describe you, you need to go into the courts and break that assignment by saying, “As for me, in this temple, in this house, this stops right now. We’re not going down this road.”

Why Do Bad Things Happen?

You might ask, “Why do bad things continue to happen?” Sometimes it is because we lose hope or we have seeds of bitterness that come when we don’t get our prayer answered quickly. Anger, rebellion and unforgiveness reproduce after sin in the garden and not the seeds of the covenant of Christ.

And we need to know that the Word says now, “To Abraham and his Seed were the promises made. He does not say, ‘And to seeds,” as of many, but as of one, “And to your Seed,’ who is Christ.” So it’s singular. “And this I say, that the law which was four hundred and thirty years later, cannot annul the covenant that was confirmed before by God in Christ, that it should make the promise of no effect, for if the inheritance is of the law and it is no longer of promise, but God gave it to Abraham by promise” (Gal. 3:16- 18).

The Words We Speak Matter

So the mouth speaks from an overflow of the heart. Therefore, when the words such as, “This is the way my family has dealt with or thought about,” whatever that subject may be, let’s say divorce, are spoken out with a hard posture that is angry or bitter, it is an indication that there is a generational curse.

“We’ve always had poverty.” “We’ve always been a family with lack.” “We’ve always had emotional struggles.” Whatever that is, this is a root of a generational curse.

Your Rights as a Believer

As a believer…

  • You have a right to be set free by the blood of Jesus.
  • You have a right to be healed, and you have a right to have provision from the Lord.
  • You have a right to take authority over it.
  • You have a right to enter into the Courts of Heaven.
  • You have a right to approach the Righteous Judge who sits at the right hand of the throne as a just Judge and bring your case.
  • You have a right to call on the blood of Jesus and the One who sits at the right hand of the Father.

Because of these covenant rights, you can pray, repent, seek forgiveness and trust in Jesus, in the blood. Even though you may not be the source of the curse, you can cancel the curse and the curse’s right and influence your atmosphere and family. Reverse the curse by the blood of Jesus and do that in the Courts of Heaven.

The Fruit of a Broken Curse

The fruit of breaking curses is being confident in your identity and comfortable around others. You may start thinking differently because you have placed Jesus as ruler over your heart. And as a result, you will have an authentic, genuine fellowship and you’ll see doors of opportunity that the Lord will open before you. You’ll be able to walk through them with abundant grace and peace because you have been set free from habitual sin and generational curses.

In Conclusion

The verse for generational curses and walking in the light…

I want to close with this, Exodus 34:6-7:

  • “And the Lord passed before him and proclaim, ‘The Lord God, merciful and gracious, long-suffering, abounding in goodness and truth, keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving inequities and transgression and sin by no means clearing the guilty. Visiting the inequities of the fathers upon the children and the children to the third and the fourth generation.”

Prayer

“The Word says, Father, that if we walk in the light, as He is the light, we have fellowship with one another and the blood of Jesus Christ, the Son, cleanses us from all sins, all generational curses and iniquitous structures.

“If we say that we have no sin, we’ve deceived ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, You are faithful and just to forgive us and cleanse us from our sins. Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us, for it is written, ‘Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree.’ Abraham’s blessings might come upon the Gentiles in Christ Jesus, and we might receive the promise of the Spirit of faith. For we were once in darkness but now are in the light of the Lord. We walk as children of light for the fruit of the Spirit and all goodness, righteousness, and truth. Finding out what is acceptable to the Lord and having no fellowship with unfruitful works of darkness.

“Father God, we thank You and give You praise. Lord, You are setting us free. Let it be recorded in the courts by the blood of Jesus. And we repent of all generational curses, known and unknown, and habitual sin, known and really all known. And Lord, we repent and ask You to give us strength to overcome all temptation. And we shall be overcomers by the strength of the joy of the Lord, who is our strength.”

God bless you and Shalom. {eoa}
