Maya Grimes, a senior at Jackson State University, is thanking God for sparing her life after being thrown from her car during a tornado in Missouri.

“I really, really thought that that was going to be my last moment,” Grimes said in an interview on CBN’s Prayer Link. “I was just thinking, you know, as the windows were all busting out on me on every side of my car, that that was it.”

Grimes was driving home to St. Louis on May 16, when the tornado hit. As the storm intensified, her car began spinning. She gripped the steering wheel and cried out, “Jesus, Jesus, Jesus, Jesus.”

Despite wearing her seatbelt, Grimes was sucked from the driver’s side door and slid down the street nearly 40 yards. “It was a very scary, definitely like horrifying and traumatic experience,” she said. After being ejected, she crawled to a light post and held on as the tornado raged.

Her injuries were minimal, despite the storm’s force. “I had gashes from the glass breaking out on my window. I had road burns from sliding down the street,” Grimes said. Emergency crews were stunned she survived. “They just couldn’t believe that I was out of the car, or that I was even talking to them.”

Grimes later shared her testimony on Instagram. “The only reason that I wanted to share in the first place was to credit God because I mean this really truly is a miracle experience.”

Her message to others is simple: “Get right with God because life is so uncertain. The plans that we have for ourselves are not always the plans that God has for us.”

Now more committed than ever to her faith, Grimes sees her survival as a call to be a voice for her generation. “It’s so important to just form the relationship for yourself and to be able to identify what it is that your faith is built on for you as an individual.”

“I just wanted to make sure that other people also know the importance of getting right and forming a real relationship with God,” she said.
