Jon Erwin, the acclaimed filmmaker behind “I Can Only Imagine” and “Jesus Revolution,” is bringing the powerful story of King David to life in a groundbreaking new series, “House of David.” This ambitious project seeks to capture the magnitude and depth of one of the Bible’s most compelling figures.
In an exclusive interview with Charisma Media, Erwin explained that this is more than just another project—it’s a goal fulfilled.
“This is a a dream come true and a project I’ve wanted to do since I was a teenager,” Erwin says.

Recognizing that David’s life is too vast to fit into a single movie, Erwin saw the need for a full-scale series. He describes “House of David” as an epic hero’s journey, likening it to “Lord of the Rings” or “Star Wars,” while staying deeply rooted in biblical truth.
The series follows the early life of David, from a forgotten shepherd boy to a warrior and anointed king. Erwin highlights the raw honesty of the Psalms, where David, despite his failures, remained a man after God’s own heart.
“We never had to know about Bathsheba, or let alone these songs about his repentance, but a king is giving that to his people. That blows me away,” Erwin says.
Erwin also credits “The Chosen” and his friendship with Dallas Jenkins for paving the way for faith-based storytelling at this scale. He hopes this series will inspire viewers to dive deeper into the Word, particularly the Psalms.
Despite Hollywood’s skepticism, Amazon has given Erwin and his team full creative control—a rare move for a faith-based series of this magnitude.
Ultimately, Erwin’s desire is to create something both entertaining and spiritually enriching.
“If you want to relate and be encouraged… read the psalms of David,” Erwin says. “Those lyrics are 3,000 years old and they’re as powerful today as they were then.”
