Pride Month Support Slips as Overall Approval of Same-Sex Marriage Falls

A recent Gallup poll reveals a significant decline in Republican support for same-sex marriage, dropping from 55% in 2021 and 2022 to 41% in 2025. This 14-point decrease marks the lowest level of support among Republicans in a decade. In contrast, support among Democrats remains high at 88%, and 76% of independents favor legal recognition of same-sex unions. The resulting 47-point gap between Republicans and Democrats is the largest recorded since Gallup began tracking this issue in 1996.

The poll also indicates a decline in the moral acceptability of same-sex relations among Republicans. Only 38% of Republicans consider such relations morally acceptable, down from 56% in 2022. Among weekly churchgoers, 33% view same-sex marriage as morally acceptable, and just 24% find gay or lesbian relations socially acceptable. These figures suggest a growing alignment with traditional Christian values within the Republican base.

The shift in Republican attitudes coincides with increased efforts by conservative lawmakers to challenge the 2015 Supreme Court decision in Obergefell v. Hodges, which legalized same-sex marriage nationwide. In January 2025, the Idaho House of Representatives passed a nonbinding resolution urging the Supreme Court to overturn the ruling, citing concerns over states’ rights and judicial overreach. Similar resolutions have been introduced in other states, reflecting a broader movement to revisit the definition of marriage at the federal level.

Justice Clarence Thomas has previously expressed interest in reconsidering substantive due process precedents, including Obergefell. In his concurring opinion in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, which overturned Roe v. Wade, Thomas argued that the Court should “reconsider all of this Court’s substantive due process precedents,” suggesting that the legal foundations of same-sex marriage could be subject to future challenges.

While national support for same-sex marriage remains relatively high, the declining approval among Republicans indicates a potential shift in the political landscape. As debates over marriage definitions and religious liberties continue, the issue is poised to remain a focal point in upcoming legislative and judicial proceedings.
