Trump Demands ‘Golden Dome’ Missile Shield to Defend US Homeland
President Donald Trump has called for the development of a “Golden Dome” missile defense system, modeled after Israel’s Iron Dome, to protect the United States from emerging threats. Speaking from the Oval Office, Trump emphasized the urgency of enhancing national security, stating, “This is a very dangerous world. We’re going to protect our citizens like never before.”
The proposed system aims to counter a range of threats, including ballistic missiles, hypersonic weapons and drone swarms. Trump signed an executive order in January 2025 directing the Department of Defense to develop and deploy this next-generation missile defense shield.

Defense contractors, including Lockheed Martin, have expressed support for the initiative. In March, Lockheed Martin released a promotional video envisioning the Golden Dome as a comprehensive shield against aerial threats, highlighting its potential to secure the nation’s future.
The scale of the project is considerable. General Michael Guetlein, vice chief of space operations for the U.S. Space Force, likened the endeavor to the Manhattan Project, of the extensive coordination and resources required.
The Golden Dome would differ significantly from Israel’s Iron Dome, which is designed to intercept short-range rockets over a relatively small area. Given the vast expanse of the United States, the Golden Dome would need to integrate various technologies, including space-based sensors and interceptors, to provide nationwide coverage.
While the initiative has garnered support, it also faces challenges. Senator Maria Cantwell has raised concerns that selling wireless spectrum currently held by the Pentagon could jeopardize key military projects, including the Golden Dome. She warned that such sales could compromise national security by affecting critical radar systems.
Despite these hurdles, the Trump administration remains committed to advancing the Golden Dome project, viewing it as a vital step in safeguarding the nation against evolving threats.
