Pro-choice supporters protest in front of the Alabama State House as Alabama state Senate votes on the strictest anti-abortion bill in the United States.

Alabama Senate Passes Strongest Abortion Ban in the Country

The Alabama Senate passed the toughest abortion ban in the country on Wednesday, HB 314 Human Life Protection Act. The bill now awaits Gov. Kay Ivey’s signature.

The law passed 25-6, and would go into effect six months after Ivey signs.

According to Reuters:

Legislation to restrict abortion rights has been introduced this year in 16 states, four of whose governors have signed bills banning abortion if an embryonic heartbeat can be detected.

The Alabama bill goes further, banning abortions at any time. Those performing abortions would be committing a felony, punishable by 10 to 99 years in prison, although a woman who receives an abortion would not be held criminally liable. …

Republican Senator Clyde Chambliss, arguing in favor of the Alabama bill, said the whole point was “so that we can go directly to the Supreme Court to challenge Roe versus Wade.”

The high court, now with a majority of conservative justices after Republican President Donald Trump appointed two, could possibly overturn Roe v. Wade, the 1973 landmark decision establishing a woman’s right to an abortion.

Natalie Brumfield, the Birmingham chapter leader for Bound4Life, praised the decision.

“YES, Alabama!!! All babies deserve LIFE! ❤️❤️❤️ And now on to Governor Ivey!” Brumfield posted to Facebook.

Other major pro-life leaders also shared their support.

“Praise God for the tipping point! This is the year America went from regulating abortion to ending it. I celebrate the victory for life with Alabama, Georgia, Ohio, Kentucky and Mississippi and all the states racing to protect babies with beating hearts,” says Janet Porter, the author of the Heartbeat Bill.

“Alabama’s new abortion restrictions reflect the common sense reality that all abortions can only be successful if they end the life of a human being,” says Shawn Carney, president of 40 Days for Life. “These new protections simply confirm what science and reason tell us about our most vulnerable Americans. The unborn should not be discriminated against but protected and given natural human rights. This is great day for Alabama and America.”
