Church of God’s Moffett Dies After Freak Accident
Billy Joe Moffett, 81, died Sunday, June 12. The former department leader and state overseer for the Church of God passed away with his family at his bedside in Cleveland, Tenn.
Moffett was in a freak accident about three weeks ago at a local home improvement store. When a customer accidentally backed into an outdoor register stand, Moffett sustained injuries. Three others were also injured and hospitalized after the accident, but have since been released.
According to the Church of God, Moffett served as an evangelist and pastor in the states of Kentucky, Georgia and Tennessee. His pastorates included Mableton, Ga. (1956-1967), Doraville, Ga. (1967-1972) and South Cleveland (1984-1986). He was state overseer for the Churches of God in Colorado/Wyoming (1972-1976), Maryland/Delaware/D.C.(1976-1980), and South Georgia (1980-1984). He also served as the director of the Department of Benevolence and superintendent of the Church of God Home for Children. Moffett later served as senior adult pastor at Mount Paran North Church of God. He also served as chairman of the Chaplains Commission and co-chair of the Benefits Board.
Moffett is survived by his wife of 62 years, Ailene Moffett, his daughter Reba Morris and her husband, Gregory, his son Brad and wife, Melissa Moffett, and grandchildren Sean Morris and Morgan Moffett.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the North Cleveland Church of God. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. at the church prior to the service. Interment will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the Mount Harmony Memorial Gardens in Mableton, Georgia.
