Baby E'layah Faith Peagues

‘Miracle’ Baby Shocks World With Her Fight for Life

She’s the smallest baby ever born, but encapsulates her parents’ hope and faith.

E’layah Faith Peagues is going home—a remarkable story because doctors never expected her to survive.

“E’layah is our miracle baby girl,” mother Megan Smith tells the Charlotte Observer of her daughter, who is one of the smallest surviving babies ever born.

E’layah Faith was born in December, weighing in at just 10 ounces. At her birth, Smith says doctors “were trying to set us up for the possibility of her not living, and I wasn’t accepting that.”

But Megan and fiance Eric Pegues named their daughter in faith and let that be their guiding force.

“We weren’t going to give up on her,” Smith says.

Months later, E’layah Faith weighs in at 5 pounds and 7 ounces, according to CBS.

“She has grown, she has been able to breathe on her own and she looks around,” Dr. Jessica Clark-Pounder said. “She pays attention to her surroundings, she knows her mom’s voice, she knows her dad’s voice… and I’m amazed she has come this far.”

Indeed, the doctor and parents agree the child is proof of miracles.
