Obama Lied About Gay Marriage to Deceive Blacks During Election, Says Adviser

U.S. President Barack Obama always supported gay marriage, but he lied to get elected, a new book reveals.

Former Obama adviser David Axelrod says it was to gain support from the church. In Believer: My Forty Years in Politics, Axelrod details, according to Time, the specifics:

“Opposition to gay marriage was particularly strong in the black church, and as he ran for higher office, he grudgingly accepted the counsel of more pragmatic folks like me, and modified his position to support civil unions rather than marriage, which he would term a ‘sacred union.’ “

The lies went beyond the black community, though. When Saddleback Church Pastor and prolific author Rick Warren asked him to define marriage.

“I believe marriage is a union between a man and a woman,” Obama told Warren to a roomful of applause. “Now for me as a Christian, it’s a sacred union, and God’s in the mix.”

And then his “evolution” on gay marriage began, as he became the first president to openly support same-sex unions.

Though, Axelrod writes, there was no evolution in the president’s heart.

Rather, “Yet if Obama’s views were ‘evolving’ publicly, they were fully evolved behind closed doors. The president was champing at the bit to announce his support for the right of gay and lesbian couples to wed—and having watched him struggle with this issue for years, I was ready, too.”
