Romney Vows to Keep America ‘Under God’

Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney has vowed to keep America “under God.”

“For me, the Pledge of Allegiance and placing our hand over our heart reminds us of the blood that was shed by our sons and daughters fighting for our liberty and sharing liberty with people around the world,” Romney told troops at the Virginia Aviation Museum Saturday after spontaneously reciting the “Pledge of Allegiance.”

And in response to the Democrats removing God from their platform last week, he added: “I will not take God out of the name of our platform. I will not take God off our coins and I will not take God out of my heart. We’re a nation that’s bestowed by God.”

Delegates removed a reference to God from their party platform at the Democratic National Convention last week. Amid public outcry, the party scrambled and voted to put God back into their document.

But Romney has consistently been hitting that topic in the last several days.

On Monday, while campaigning in Ohio, he said, “I will not take God out of my heart. I will not take God out of the public square.”

Though many were appalled at the Democratic party’s initial removal of God, Obama has seen a slight incline in polls.

The president’s lead among registered voters grew from 45 percent to 49 percent in Gallup’s tracking poll. This is his widest lead in the survey since late April.

Obama is also trying to fire up his base.

“If you give up on the idea that your voice can make a difference, then other folks are going to fill the void,” he said in St. Petersburg.
