90 Seconds Until Doom? Christian Response to the Doomsday Clock with Troy Black

Read Time: 2 minutes 25 seconds

The Doomsday Clock was designed by a group of scientists to warn the world about how close we are to self-annihilation. This year the clock was moved closer to midnight signaling to the public that we have moved closer to destroying our world through dangerous technology.

People watched around the world as the news came out filled with doom and gloom. Many are wondering what tomorrow could hold.

We sat down with Troy Black to talk about the biblical perspective on the Doomsday Clock and what Christians should take away from the news.

“For me personally, it was God reminding me ‘hey I have a clock, it’s better than their clock, it’s better than the world’s clock, I have a timer. Until I say time is up, time is not up.’ That is what I’ve been hearing from the Holy Spirit,” Black says.

The clock has been ticking for 76 years and on Jan. 24, 2023, it was set the closest it’s been to midnight with 90 seconds left. The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists created the clock and cited the current Russia-Ukraine war as the reason the hand has moved closer to midnight.

“Another thing God pointed me to was a picture of the disciples in the boat,” Black says. Despite the storm surrounding the world, we still serve a God who is in complete control.

“It’s so easy for scientists to say this is the direction we are going. But, with God’s plan and His timing…no matter what the scientists say, no matter what’s happens in Russia-Ukraine, or the Middle East, we are not going down with the boat until the plan of God is fulfilled,” Black says.

God has a beautiful plan still ahead for each individual Christian and the global church as a whole. While your neighbors, coworkers and family members are consumed with fear and worry, you contain hope inside of you, and that is powerful enough to shift an atmosphere.

You read Job in the Bible consistently asking God “why.” Job wanted to know why all these terrible things had happened in his life. Today you might be wondering the same thing. Whether personally or when you look at the world as a whole, you may wonder where God is.

“We see more than anywhere else in Scripture God actually answers this question,” Black says.

In Job 38 God speaks to Job saying, “Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth? Declare, if you have understanding. Who has determined its measurements; if you know? Or who has stretched the line upon it?”

God asked Job if he had commanded the morning and told dawn to know its place. God knew that Job had never done any of those things, but He was reminding Job of His sovereignty.

Talking about the Doomsday scientists Black says, “You’re trying to understand it, but can you really truly understand it? No, you can’t because you didn’t have anything to do with its conception.”

In the rest of the video, Black paints a prophetic picture of the hand on the Doomsday Clock and God breaking the hand of those who raise their hand against Him. Be encouraged! Nothing can come up against God and His timing. {eoa}
