Ghana President Declares Today a Day of Prayer, Fasting as Country Grapples With COVID-19

Ghana President Nana Akufo-Addo declared Wednesday to be a day of prayer and fasting as his nation deals with the coronavirus, news outlets report.

Ghana’s Health Ministry states that there are 27 cases of the coronavirus in the country and that two people have died from the disease. The surviving 25 people are being treated in isolation.

Akufo-Addo implored both Christians and Muslims to pray for a swift end to the virus.

“Let us pray to God to protect our nation and save us from this pandemic,” he said, according to IOL.

He posted a guide on Instagram to help Christians know how to pray, including a list of detailed prayer points.

He also encouraged people of faith to refrain from taking ungodly advantage of the pandemic.

“For all people of faith, this is a time to show charity and compassion,” GhanaWeb reports him as saying. “I urge you to reflect on your beliefs, and not to engage in practices that will escalate the present anxieties in the nation. Price hiking and other such opportunistic practices are beneath the dignity of the moment.”

Last week, Christian leaders prayed alongside Akufo-Addo at the Jubilee House during a breakfast prayer meeting. They interceded for the entire country and especially for the medical workers on the front lines.

According to the latest World Health Organization situation report, there are 372,755 cases of COVID-19 across the globe and 16,231 deaths.
