Moldova Orphanage Praying for God’s Intervention Amid Historic Drought

The people of Moldova are used to hardship. Seventy percent of the adults are alcoholics. In many areas, unemployment is above 70 percent. A middle-class worker makes about $300 a month, while the cost to buy or rent housing is far more than in any city in America.

And now they have drought. In a country known to export two things—wine and women—the drought is costing farmers their crops in more than 90 percent of the land. Food prices are skyrocketing.

Nowhere is this felt more than in orphanages across Moldova. In most of these homes, hunger was a way of life even before the drought.

Stella’s Voice—an organization in Moldova dedicated to giving unloved orphans a voice of their own—runs the first private orphanage in the country, and certainly the only Christian home.  

“Moldova is being hit with a historical drought. Rivers and streams and lakes are literally drying up,” says Philip Cameron, founder of Stella’s Voice.  

This drought is so destructive that the well Stella’s Voice built just a few years ago is running dry; the deepest well they have ever built is running out of water.

“It is impossible to know how this will affect our costs to care for the 130 orphans in our care,” Cameron says. “All we can do is pray.”

More than ever, Cameron and the others in leadership are relying on God’s promise to be with His people through every step across this dry riverbed.
    
But still, in the face of this drought, Cameron and the orphans have not fainted in their work. Eleven girls from Stella’s Voice are on tour across America, sharing their painful stories of life as an orphan before they met Cameron and Chrissie, his wife.

Every weekend, they visit churches and fellowship with the congregation. They have been on tour since May and have visited churches in Florida, Alabama, and North Carolina. God is still using the ministry Stella’s Voice during this horrid drought.

Firsthand, they are demonstrating that God is more powerful than this drought, or the Drought of 2007. As Paul so passionately reminds us in Romans 8:39, “neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

Neither water nor drought will prevent God’s message from being shared through Stella’s Voice.
