Darren Wilson Is Giving His Films Away for Free
(Starting today, WP Films will be running a contest leading up to the free showings with a chance to win their entire store. To find out more, go to: wpfilm.com/sharathon-contest/ ).
Why do you do what you do for a living? Whatever it is, think for a second why you do it? Is it just for a paycheck? Is it to fulfill some need inside of you? Is it because you simply enjoy it? Is it because the benefits are good? This is a question I have continuously asked myself for over a decade now. I’m a filmmaker, but my movies are a little different than what most filmmakers make. You see, I try to film God for a living. I try to export the kingdom of God around the earth through media. It’s a great job, believe me, but it’s also one I take very, very seriously. Because if you’re going to be an ambassador for Jesus, you better make sure your heart is in it for the right reasons.
This is not the career path I ever envisioned for myself. I am a writer first and foremost, and I was a college professor for 13 years before I started making movies. But God has a habit of getting His way, and for whatever reason, He thought it would be a good idea to make this kid with an inquisitive mind that bordered on unbelief His official documentarian. Bono definitely got it right in the U2 song, “Mysterious Ways”, when singing about the Holy Spirit that “She sees the man inside the child.”
When you own a business, even one that is wholly dedicated to glorifying God, it is very easy to sometimes slip into seasons where you’re running a business more than bringing glory to God, and it’s hard sometimes to see the forest through the trees. On the one hand, you want to be a good steward with what God has given you. On the other, you want to be as effective in spreading His goodness to the world around you. I often get Christians contacting me who are very upset that I charge money for my films. They think they should be free because “the gospel is free.” I usually reply that yes, the gospel is free, but what I make isn’t the gospel. They’re movies. Then I ask them if they paid money for their Bible, which literally contains the gospel, and then I don’t hear from them anymore. But while these films are indeed my livelihood, the sentiment isn’t lost on me. I understand the basis of what they’re saying. I’ve made movies that can literally change people’s lives, but I’m making people pay to see them. If they were free, more lives could be impacted.
So every once in a while I like to do just that. Starting next week, on April 16, my movies will be available for people to watch completely free all around the world. Each day will feature a different film, and it will culminate on Easter Sunday when we make our newest film, Finger of God 2, free to watch.
Here is the schedule:
April 16 – Finger of God
April 17 – Furious Love
April 18 – Father of Lights
April 19 – Holy Ghost
April 20 – Holy Ghost Reborn
April 21 – Finger of God 2
To kick this off, we’re going to run a fun little contest for people to help us get the word out. It begins today and runs until April 15. The grand prize will be literally our entire store—over $600 worth of stuff. You can find out more and sign up for the contest here: wpfilm.com/sharathon-contest/.
We want to make sure no one misses this opportunity to see these films that have changed millions of lives around the world over the past 11 years. So come join us at the contest if you want, or just wait until next week to start watching the films. If you’ve seen them, tell everyone you know that they can watch them for free. If you haven’t, well now is your chance to see what all the fuss is about. My prayer is that they touch you, challenge you and drive you into a deeper desire for Jesus than ever before.
