Should the NFL Discipline Cleveland Brown’s Isaiah Crowell for Posting Image of Cop Beheading?
On July 11, Cleveland Browns running back Isaiah Crowell posted on social media an image showing blood gushing out of a police officer’s neck at the hands of an ISIS-like terrorist. As part of his post, Crowell commented about the photo: “They give polices (sic) all types of weapons and they continuously choose to kill us. …” To that he added the hashtag #Weak, further indicating his intent to incite.
Although Crowell did apologize through a social media post and video for posting the image of a police officer being beheaded, he issued no apology, explanation or retraction of the comment he made along with the picture.
However, Crowell’s apology is not the issue at hand. It is the NFL’s lack of action that is extremely problematic.
In 2014, Miami Dolphins Don Jones, who ironically is now with the Cleveland Browns, posted a comment on social media criticizing homosexual behavior during the 2014 NFL draft. Jones tweeted “horrible” in response to a photo depicting Michael Sam, the first publicly gay player to be drafted in the NFL, kissing another man. Jones was fined and suspended and forced to attend sensitivity training before he could return to the team.
Will the NFL fine, suspend and force Crowell to go through sensitivity training like Jones before returning to the team?
In response to Crowell posting the image, the Cleveland Browns said, “We have spoken to Isaiah regarding his extremely disturbing and unacceptable social media decision. It was completely inappropriate, and we have made him aware of our high level of disappointment.” The NFL said, “The image was inappropriate and insensitive.”
The NFL wrongfully fined and suspended Jones and forced him to attend sensitivity training for criticizing homosexuality while Crowell only gets a slap on the wrist from the NFL.
According to a politically correct NFL, criticizing homosexuality is worse than inciting violence against police officers.
The NFL should apply equal punishment to Crowell as it did to Jones.
