The Spiritual Significance of Tonight’s Blood Moon
The week, on July 27, during the Jewish Sabbath, a blood moon will be visible over Jerusalem and much of Europe, Africa and Western Asia.
A blood moon, or lunar eclipse, occurs when the moon moves into the shadow of the Earth. The sunlight is refracted through the Earth’s atmosphere, giving the moon the reddish color which causes it to be called a blood moon.
In the Bible, the moon is the faithful witness in the sky, symbolic of the believers (Ps. 89:37) while the sun symbolizes Christ the bridegroom and champion (Ps. 19:4-5). The apostle Peter, quoting from the prophet Joel, included blood moons in the signs of the outpouring of the Holy Spirit and the time of salvation before Christ returns (Acts 2:17-21). The red color of the Moon reminds us that we are covered by the blood of the Lamb and have overcome Satan by our witness and the blood of the Lamb (Rev. 12:11).
This blood moon occurs in the constellation Capricorn (the goat), which is the fifth chapter of the Star Bible, during the fifth month of the Jewish sacred year. Capricorn is a picture of a dying goat, reminiscent of the sin offering of Israel (Lev. 16:15), representing the sacrifice of Jesus for our sins (Heb. 9:24-28). Star names Deneb Algedi (the sacrifice comes) and Dabih (the sacrifice slain) confirm this message.
In modern times the fifth Jewish month has been called “Ab”, but in the Bible, the fifth Jewish month is denoted simply by the Hebrew for word fifth, chamishiy. However, a related word, chamal, adds meaning to the fifth month. Chamal means merciful, to pity and to spare and supports the idea that five is the number of grace. Thus the message of the atonement coming in the fifth sign of Capricorn corresponds with the message of salvation and grace brought by the Jewish fifth month.
The blood moon message of salvation, and the message of Christ’s sacrifice in Capricorn are further amplified by the presence of the planet Mars in Capricorn just six degrees away from the blood moon. Like the blood moon, the red planet Mars represents the red blood of Jesus that redeems us and brought us life (Heb. 9:12-14). Mars reaches its greatest brightness in 15 years on July 27, the night of the blood moon, virtually shouting the gospel of life through the blood of Christ sacrificed for us.
Let us pray that the Messianic Jews and the other Christians in Jerusalem and the Eastern Hemisphere will boldly proclaim the salvation message of the Heavens.
And let us pray for boldness for America Christians when the Eclipse is over and the full moon rises at sunset in the east on July 27 in America. {eoa}
