While some reports indicate new magma chambers could trigger Washington volcano Mount St. Helen’s to erupt very soon, some scientists call it poppycock.
The information stems from an iMush study, which tracked the magma systems under the volcano.
Many sites took the news and declared a revelation that “there’s a real danger that the volcano possibly (could erupt) again—geologists identified an enormous second chamber, buried between 7 to 23 miles (11-37 km) deep under the surface,” ZME Science reports. “The reservoir is connected to a smaller chamber that rests directly beneath the volcano.”
On the other hand, sites like Wired delved a bit deeper into the research, claiming the magma discoveries and tracking don’t affect eruption patterns.
The data are difficult to interpret, Wired’s Erik Klemetti writes, and that has some believers such as Jim Bakker seeing the discovery as a sign of the end times.
“We are in the final stage setting before Jesus comes back,” Bakker says. “We are in the last days!”
