Evangelical Pastor Offers Inspiration to GOP Convention

Darrell Scott, an evangelical pastor from Cleveland, took the stage Wednesday night to make the case for his friend, Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump.

That message, filled with inspiration for those in attendance at the Quick Loans Arena in downtown Cleveland, as well as for the millions watching on television, was a highlight of the Republican National Convention. In the process, he directly took on many of the stereotypes of the Republican nominee.

“In the many times that we have met since, we have spoken about the economy, race relations, immigration, jobs, urban revitalization and revitalization of the military, and many other issues that are critical to our nation’s well being,” he said. “The truth is Donald Trump is a conservative father and grandfather who feels that his best days are still in front of him and not behind him.”

Scott said that, despite his many accomplishments, Trump “still feels a void that he believes can only be filled by service to his country and service to his fellow Americans.” He then directed his attention to other black Americans who may feel they owe allegiance to the Democratic Party.

“The truth is the Democratic Party has failed us at home,” he said. “Our growth is lethargic and our debt is deeper. We are spiritually empty, and we are more divided now than we’ve ever been before. Abroad we [aren’t] respected. We’re not feared by our adversaries, and our friends cannot count on us either.

“This is their legacy, and we need to make a sharp turn. We need to put into practice the great ideas and principles that our country was founded on and which, after God, are the source of strength that has made this nation great.”
