Bernie Sanders

Is This Presidential Candidate Dropping Out?

According to several reports Wednesday afternoon, less than 24 hours after U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders (D-Vt.) took an electoral beating from Democratic Party front-runner Hillary Clinton, the senator is laying off staff members.

Lots of them.

Sanders has won a number of states, but due to the Byzantine nomination process employed by the DNC, he’s losing the delegate count as Clinton has raked in the party establishment “superdelegates.” In the hours immediately following the results Tuesday night, there were reports he was “reassessing” his candidacy.

“We’re 80 percent of the way through the caucuses and primaries, and we make adjustments as we go along,” Sanders’ communications director, Michael Briggs, said. “This is a process that we’ve done before of right-sizing the campaign as we move through the calendar.”

But if Sanders expects to win the Democratic nomination, he’s going to need a robust national staff. So these reports are certainly noteworthy.

According to campaign finance disclosures, Sanders’ campaign has continued to haul in a lot of money, but he’s also been spending a lot of money in an attempt to make inroads against Clinton. He started April with about $17 million cash on hand, but spent more than $45 million in March.
