Planned Parenthood Says This Candidate Is Their Biggest Threat
At a recent campaign event for Hillary Clinton last week, Cecile Richards, the president of the Planned Parenthood Federation, decided to take a jab at one of the Republicans running against the former secretary of state.
“A woman voting for Ted Cruz is like a chicken voting for Colonel Sanders,” she said.
If that were the most absurd thing Planned Parenthood said about the Texas senator, perhaps it would be something to laugh off. But the rhetoric has become far more ominous from the nation’s largest abortion organization.
In an email to its members, Planned Parenthood warned that Ted Cruz is the “biggest threat” to it abortuary business, among the leading Republican presidential candidates. The email sought funds for its political campaign supporting Hillary Clinton, the first presidential candidate the organization has ever endorsed in its 100-year history.
“[E]very Republican candidate for president this year would be a complete disaster, but Ted Cruz could very well be the biggest threat we face,” Planned Parenthood Executive Vice President Dawn Laguens said. “[U]nlike Trump and Kasich, who are more or less in line with the Republican Party’s already terrible positions on reproductive rights, Cruz takes things much, much further.
“And he has the fan base to prove it. About 50 percent of Trump’s and Kasich’s supporters think abortion should be illegal in all or most cases, but a whopping 73 percent of Cruz’s supporters want to ban abortion in all or most cases. [He also] consistently says he will open an investigation into Planned Parenthood on his first day in office.
But maybe that’s less surprising when you see some of the people who have endorsed him—people like Troy Newman, the notorious anti-abortion extremist. We can’t let anyone near the White House who would force a woman to carry a dangerous or unwanted pregnancy.”
