Ben Affleck: Faith Is a Big Theme of ‘The Way Back’

Pastor Erwin McManus interviewed Ben Affleck on March 1 at Mosaic church about his new movie The Way Back. Affleck says faith was a big theme of the movie, and is a big part of his own life.

“Faith is something I have, and is also something that’s been a struggle for me,” Affleck says. “I’m going to church, and I really find the Christian teaching beautiful and moving. The hard thing for me is, when I struggle, when I suffer, when I see things that are painful, I have doubt because, how is there a God that allows this to happen?

“For example, in this movie, there’s the grief of the loss of a child, which seems like the most senseless and terrible thing in the world. … One of the things that somebody said to me once was, you don’t need to ultimately be sure. You need to seek. Can you seek God? Can you look for God? … That faith has served me well in recovery, as an alcoholic.”
