Pastor Tim Keller’s Devastating Cancer Diagnosis Shared with Hope and Strength from God
Pastor Tim Keller chose to turn devastating news into a testament of God’s faithfulness when he recently shared of being diagnosed with Stage IV pancreatic cancer.
On Dec. 3, Keller posted on Facebook a short message letting his followers know his cancer diagnosis but that instead of sadness, he shared how it was “endlessly comforting to have a God who is both infinitely more wise and more loving than I am. He has plenty of good reasons for everything He does and allows that I cannot know, and therein is my hope and strength.”
Keller first made his diagnosis of pancreatic cancer known back in June 2020 on social media, mentioning that he had been recently diagnosed and was undergoing chemotherapy in New York City after additional testing was performed.
However, this new admission of the severity with his cancer couples with his belief that God has reason for this diagnosis and will provide everything Keller needs to battle this cancer. He previously was diagnosed with, and is now in remission from, thyroid cancer, which he revealed cured him of any doubts he had about God and inspired his 2009 book, The Reason for God.
Keller, who is the found pastor of Redeemer Presbyterian Church in New York City, also thanked the outpouring of prayers and comments he received from his Facebook posting, stating in a tweet, “I deeply appreciate prayer for my situation! But my main purpose in the last post was to show that having a God who in some ways is beyond our comprehension (esp regarding evil and suffering) is more of a spiritual strength than it is an intellectual problem.”
He mentioned previously in 2020 how he had terrific “human doctors” but that “most importantly I have the Great Physician himself caring for me.” {eoa}
