Which Denomination Is Paying for Clergy Abortions?
The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America is covering more on their health plan than many people realize.
Portico, which is the Benefits Services of the ELCA and one of the official ministries of the denomination, has an entire section on “Abortion and the ELCA Health Plan.“

Portico, writes that in regards to abortion, “the church encourages those contemplating abortion to engage in moral deliberation through prayerful reflection, support and counsel.”
The plan covers contraceptives from “oral contraceptives, emergency contraceptives (also called ‘morning-after’ pills, intrauterine devices, sterilization and contraceptive counseling.” Morning after pills of course are most controversially known and understood to be abortion pills because they are not preventative in nature.
However, the ELCA takes their offerings even further.
The ELCA Health Plan covers procedures related to miscarriage and terminating a pregnancy. Because health care providers and the ELCA Health Plan must comply with the law in whatever jurisdiction a patient seeks care, abortions will be covered only if a member receives that care from a provider in a state where the abortion complies with the state’s laws.
Shame on them for categorizing women going through miscarriage into the same class as those seeking abortions. Further, there is clearly a recognition that abortion may not be covered everywhere because of the law. The laws against abortion are put in place, not to harm someone’s religious liberty or freedom, but rather it is to protect the very life of an unborn baby. This is something the church knows fully well.
In certain circumstances, late term abortions can even be covered by the ELCA’s plan “when the life of the mother is threatened or when the fetus has lethal abnormalities indicating death is imminent.”
This medical plan is for clergy members, those who are supposed to be living according to the scriptures and seeking the Lord with all of their hearts. Instead, they are falling into the trap of the world, celebrating sin and calling good evil and evil good. Pray for the ELCA, that their eyes may be opened to the truth of the gospel.
