Why Ben Carson May ‘Go All the Way’
During the first hour of Wednesday’s “Hugh Hewitt Show,” presidential candidate Dr. Ben Carson was asked about the status of his campaign, and where he sees it heading after Saturday’s South Carolina Republican Primary.
“My plan is to continue on as long as I’m receiving vigorous support from the people, which continues to be the case right now,” he said. “I have a lot of people saying to me, ‘Don’t you even dare think about dropping out. We need that voice of reason.’ And who knows what’s going to happen?”
Referencing the apparent volatility of front-runner Donald Trump, he said that “all kinds of things are possible,” and broke into a baseball analogy. He said those who “call it quits” after just the third inning ensure that the other team will definitely win.
Hewitt said he believed Republicans will end up with an “open convention,” looking at the RNC’s rules. He said he doesn’t think any candidate will be able to get to 1,237 delegates, and noted that Carson already has some delegates.
“Are you going to hang onto them and just go to the distance to Cleveland and have some chips at the table?” he asked.
“Right now, that seems a reasonable course of action,” Carson said. “But obviously, I’m going to be paying attention to how things play out, particularly on Super Tuesday, and the SEC primary. I’m going to be looking at all of that, obviously, very carefully.”
Hewitt and Carson also discussed the process to appoint a replacement for Supreme Court Associate Justice Antonin Scalia, Democrats’ use of “coded racial language,” the coarseness of the current political debate, and how he would address the nation’s downgraded military.
