Trump’s Campaign Manager Drops Another VP Hint

Now that Donald Trump’s rise to Republican Party presidential nominee is all but guaranteed, speculation is mounting over who might be his vice presidential running mate in November.

The businessman himself has fueled part of the speculation by hinting that his eventual pick would need to have legislative experience. The logic there being that he would need someone to help ensure his agenda moves forward throughout the halls of Congress.

That led to a large list of potential candidates, including a number of governors, who might be under consideration.

Trump’s campaign manager, Corey Lewandowski, shed some light on the issue Tuesday during an interview with CBS News. In the interview, he said while the campaign won’t comment on who it has or hasn’t—or will or won’t—vet for the second spot on the ticket, the businessman was seeking a running mate who has federal legislative experience.

The statement would seem to eliminate from consideration New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, Oklahoma Gov. Mary Fallin, Florida Gov. Rick Scott, former Texas Gov. Rick Perry and New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez. It simultaneously would seem to boost the prospects of U.S. Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.), former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.), and Indiana Gov. Mike Pence (a former congressman).

“Here’s what the decision comes down to and it’s very simple,” Lewandowski said. “Mr. Trump is going to pick the person who is best to partner with him to get his legislative agenda through Congress … tax cuts for the middle class, reducing our debt … creating a better economy, renegotiating our bad trade deals.”
