DNC Adds God to Platform, Recognizes Jerusalem as Israel’s Capital
Last night, amid boos and screams of no, the Democratic National Convention chair, Antonio Villaraigosa, passed an amendment to the party’s platform that stated God was central to Democrats’ beliefs and recognized Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.
After initially adopting a platform that made no mention of God on Tuesday, Villaraigosa added a new section that needed a two-thirds majority voice-vote.
The L.A. mayor took the vote three times. Each time the nays seemed to match the yeas. Eventually he declared a majority for amending the platform, even though the final vote was not a clear plurality.
Fox News reports that President Obama personally requested the platform changes be made. With reference to “God” being removed, White House officials said the president asked: “Why did it change in the first place?”
Both Mitt Romney and his running mate had previously criticized the omission of God from the platform saying that the Democratic Party had veered to the “extreme wing.”
“[That] this party purposely removed God from their platform suggests a party that is increasingly out of touch with the mainstream of the American people,” Romney said. “I see it as being out of touch and detached.”
Flip Benham, director of Operation save America, is among those rejoicing.
“We preached our hearts out about the fact that those who claimed Christ and were delegates in the DNC were born for a time such as this,” he says. “We pleaded with them, in the strong Name of Jesus to stand strong for our Lord even if they had to stand alone.”
