Multiple people were injured when a school bus collided with a dump truck on a highway in New Jersey on Thursday, police said.

“There are serious injuries, but as far as how many, I don’t have a number,” said Alejandro Goez, a trooper with the New Jersey State Police.

Citing unnamed sources, New York NBC-affiliate News 4 reported that at least two people, one student and one adult chaperone, have died.

The school bus was taking pupils from East Brook Middle School to Waterloo Village when the crash happened, Paramus Public Schools said on Facebook.

New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy went to the middle school. “Our hearts are broken by today’s tragedy,” Murphy said on Twitter.

The crash, in Mount Olive Township in Morris County, shut all westbound lanes of I-80, New Jersey State Police said.

Injured passengers were being treated at local hospitals, Paramus Public Schools said. Media images showed a full-length yellow school bus with a smashed front end, missing wheels and tipped on its side on a grassy median as emergency staff worked around the crash site.

The National Transportation Safety Board is gathering information on the crash, the agency said on Twitter. {eoa}
