What Different Religions Believe About the Devil and His Demons

Share:

Some groups do not acknowledge the existence of evil spirits at all.

Ernest Holmes (founder of the New Thought Group, the United Church of Religious Science)

“The only devil we shall ever know will be that which appears as the result of our negative thinking.”

Evil spirits are “discordant and chaotic thought patterns consciously retained which tend to influence the conscious faculties negatively.”

Baha’i

Any reference to something being satanic is metaphorical, not literal.

Hinduism

Evil spirits were created from Brahma’s side, created with an evil nature, or they can be human beings who lived evil lives or failed to follow their dharma.

Zoroastrianism

This religion traces the existence of demons to Ahriman, the god of evil and darkness.

Taoism

Taoism teaches evil spirits (kuei) may actually be disembodied human spirits.

Islam

Islam distinguishes between jinn and demons. Jinn are created good, but many succumb to wicked influences, become evil and affect human beings in evil ways. Some are benevolent and helpful to humans. The devil is referred to as Iblis who was either an angel or a jinn who refused to prostrate himself before Adam. Demons are shayatin who are limited to evil, some believe created out of hell-fire.

Christianity

Hell was created “for the devil and his angels” according to Matthew 25:41, signifying that they are angelic beings. Other passages dealing with Satan and his demonic underlings include Matthew 8:28-29; 2 Peter 2:4; Jude 1:6; Revelation 12:1-10, 20.
