Keys to Breakthrough in the Spirit: ‘By My Hand’

We are digging into the words of the Hebrew prophet Samuel to discover principles that need to be operative in our lives for breakthrough in the Spirit, which result in emotional, psychological and physical healing that impats very area of our lives.

“When the Philistines heard that they had anointed David king over Israel, all the Philistines went up to seek out David; and when David heard of it, he went down to the stronghold” (2 Sam. 5:17, NASB 1995).

Notice that as soon as David was anointed king, the Philistines attacked him. The application here is this: when we are anointed and moving forward in the Spirit, we will face supernatural resistance just as David did. It is like the law of gravity. It is just that simple. When we become a greater threat to darkness, as we grow in power, we can expect the devil to fight us. But learn this lesson: David did something in response. He countered the attack. He reacted to the enemy. He was not passive. When you and I respond vigorously and aggressively to the enemy, we will grow in our effectiveness to dispel him. But if we are hesitant and afraid, he will continue to beat us up. That is what he does.

“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy” (John 10:10a).

But Jesus assures us using these words: “I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly” (John 10:10b).

Picture that David is in the stronghold now. His first response to the enemy’s assault is to dig deep into God. And now, he has the confidence to inquire of the Lord, “’Shall I go up against the Philistines? Will You give them into my hand?’” (2 Sam. 5:19a).

David was clinging to God. He did not rush in on his own to attack the Philistines. David had enough wisdom to realize that unless God went before him, and God was with him, he would not succeed.
