Kirk Cameron Wants to ‘Save Christmas’ From Christians

Christmas is more than a month away yet stores are already loading up with decorations and shopping, and people’s calendars are filling up.

You may hear Merry Christmas replaced with “Happy Holidays” or “Seasons Greetings,” and even see public nativity scenes being removed.

But isn’t Jesus the reason for the season? Actor Kirk Cameron is weighing in on issue of these seasonal attacks with a new film, Saving Christmas.

“I made Saving Christmas because I love Christmas. I love everything about Christmas. The cookies, the stories, the songs,” he said. “Some people are saying Christmas is so infected with paganism that we shouldn’t have Christmas trees, holly, mistletoe or any of that stuff.”

“I decided this is the thing that will steal our joy at Christmas,” he explained. “I wanted to make a movie that inspires maximum joy and celebration this Christmas.”

What should families know about this weekend’s box office openers? Bob Waliszewski, director of Focus on the Family’s entertainment review department, Plugged In Online, answered this and more on CBN News Today, Nov. 7. Click play to watch.

The movie follows a man named Christian who sees Christmas as a time for pointless shopping and useless traditions.

When Christian’s Scrooge-like attitude begins to sour the party, Cameron’s character decides to show Christian the true meaning of Christmas.

Aside from spreading Christmas cheer, Cameron’s main goal is to tackle some of the most disputed issues around the celebration of Christ’s birth.

“This is a public declaration that the King of heaven on earth has landed and every thing’s going to change now, and it did. When we celebrate Christmas, it shouldn’t be something private and tame and put our politically correct seatbelts on,” Cameron told CBN News.

The film provides the history behind the traditions, including the Christmas tree, St. Nicholas, gifts and family gatherings.

Speaking of family, Cameron casted his real-life sister, Bridget Cameron, as one of the stars.

“A lot of people know my sister Candace Cameron Bure from Full House and Dancing with the Stars recently. But I have three sisters. My oldest of the three is Bridgett. We always said the real performer in our family is her because she can sing, dance, play music, and she is making her debut performance in the film,” Cameron said.

A number of Christian artists are on the movie soundtrack, including Casting Crowns, Steven Curtis Chapman and the group Building 429, performing the film’s title song.

Saving Christmas will open in 400 theaters across the country on Nov. 14 in select theaters for two weeks only.
