Michael Tait’s Faith-Led Exit From the Newsboys Stuns Fans
Michael Tait, the dynamic lead singer of the Christian band Newsboys, has announced that he’s stepping down after more than 15 incredible years with the group. His decision, fueled by prayer and fasting, gives us all something to think about when it comes to handling life’s big moments.
In a heartfelt social media post, he shared the journey that brought him to this major choice. “Fifteen years ago, my life was forever changed when I received the invite to step into the role of lead singer for Newsboys,” he wrote. Reflecting on his time with the band, he called it “some of the most fulfilling, faith-filled, and rewarding years of my life.” And it’s no wonder—under his leadership, the band experienced a major resurgence with hits like “Born Again” and “God’s Not Dead,” reaching fans all over the world.
Tait’s announcement wasn’t just a quick decision. “This decision does not come lightly and has been a shock to even myself,” he admitted. But he didn’t make this call on a whim. “Amidst prayer and fasting, I have clarity that this is the right decision,” he said. And here’s where it gets inspiring: Tait leaned on Matthew 6:33, a verse that reminded him to “seek first his kingdom and his righteousness.” It’s a great reminder for all of us to keep God at the center when making those tough life choices.

This chapter of Tait’s life also shows the power of taking time to really think things through. Let’s face it: In today’s fast-paced world, it’s easy to rush into decisions. But the singer’s story is a great example of how prayer and fasting can bring clarity. Fasting—something we see paired with prayer throughout the Bible—helps us draw closer to God, quiet the noise, and focus on His plan for us.
Of course, Tait leaves behind an incredible legacy with the Newsboys. Since stepping into the lead role in 2009, he didn’t just keep the band going; he helped take it to the next level. “Together we wrote and produced music that I am deeply proud of—from ‘Born Again’ and ‘We Believe’ to ‘Worldwide Revival’ and, of course, ‘God’s Not Dead,’” he shared. And let’s not forget those high-energy performances that brought people closer to God all around the world.
The Newsboys aren’t slowing down, though. Duncan Phillips, Jeff Frankenstein, Jody Davis and Adam Agee are ready for their next chapter. In their own message to fans, they said, “We are grateful for the extended season Michael has had with Newsboys. … As he walks into the next season of life, we are stepping into the next season of Newsboys.” They’re kicking off their Worldwide Revival Nights tour and made it clear: “Newsboys isn’t going anywhere; we’re going everywhere!”
Before his time with Newsboys, Tait was already a household name in Christian music as part of DC Talk with TobyMac and Kevin Smith (Max). His career has been all about sharing the gospel through music, and that’s something that won’t change anytime soon.
While it’s bittersweet to see him step away, his trust in God’s plan is inspiring. “Although nervous about the future, I am excited about what it holds for both myself and for Newsboys, as we all seek first His kingdom and His righteousness,” he said.
So, what can we learn from all this? When life throws big decisions our way, Tait’s journey reminds us to pause, pray, fast and put God first. It’s not always easy, but with faith leading the way, we can walk into the future with confidence and peace.
