Spirit of Jesus Enters Former Atheist’s Car, Steers Vehicle to Safety

National evangelist for InterVarsity R. York Moore compares his story of salvation to the conversion of Paul. Earning the nickname “Satan” on his college campus, Moore says he was known for persecuting Christians. But when the former atheist decided life was meaningless one night, God intervened.

“I had simply come to the conclusion that there’s no reason to live if there is no God. And so my conversion to Christ happened during an attempted suicide on Christmas Eve in my third year of college. …

“I got in my little red sports car, going about 90 miles an hour down the freeway. And my plan was to smash it on a viaduct near my home. And as I got that twisted sense of courage in that moment, fully intending to kill myself, the Spirit of Jesus entered the vehicle. Now I wouldn’t have used those words at that time. All I knew is that … there was a being in the car other than myself, and He steered that car to safety.”

Moore’s encounter with Jesus influenced the way he began his ministry with InterVarsity—it led him to convey as best he could the “power” of the Holy Spirit to everyone he came across, he said on the “C-POP” podcast on the Charisma Podcast Network.

“Ministry is not just our best practices and our best thoughts and morning-discipleship meetings and innocuous prayers. No, ministry is about the movement of the Spirit of God. It’s about power.”
