Church Attendance Surges Amid Spiritual Hunger and Government Crackdowns
Church attendance in the United Kingdom has skyrocketed by 50% over the past six years—a staggering jump no one saw coming. And it’s not because of fancy marketing or celebrity pastors. It’s because people are desperate for meaning in a world that feels like it’s spinning out of control.
As reported by CBN News, the Bible Society recently released data showing that not only is the decline of church attendance reversing, but churches are becoming more ethnically diverse and youthful.

Nearly half—47%—of Black Britons aged 18 to 34 are now attending church at least monthly. And across the UK, congregations are seeing a broad mix of people, from different cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds, showing up hungry for something real.
Lead Pastor Mark Pawson of Palm Church in Glasgow says it’s not just numbers—it’s a genuine move of God.
“People are looking for meaning,” he explained. “Generations now have access to everything through social media, and they’re realizing none of it satisfies. So they’re asking, ‘What’s the point of all this?’”
This quiet revival is happening even as the UK government continues its clampdown on public expressions of faith. From arrests for silent prayer near abortion clinics to censorship of street preaching, the message from authorities has been clear: keep faith private. But the opposite is happening. People are leaning into church, not away from it.
According to the same report, 31% of non-churchgoers in the UK say they would attend church—if someone would just invite them. That’s a huge opportunity.
Pastor Pawson emphasized that what’s needed now is courage. “We need divine appointments to invite people, strength to keep preaching the Gospel, and the Holy Spirit to give us the right words at the right time,” he said.
In a time when darkness seems to be tightening its grip, the light of revival is breaking through in the most unexpected places.
