Colossal Statues Discovered at Ancient Temple Fuel Biblical Giant Theories
Archaeologists have unearthed a massive cache of statues—some of “colossal size”—at a once-lost temple dedicated to the Greek god Apollo in Cyprus, renewing interest in both classical mythology and biblical accounts of giants.
As reported by Fox News, the Department of Antiquities in Cyprus shared news of the discovery in an April 28, Facebook post. “It was furnished with a lavish abundance of votive statues numbering in the hundreds, some of which were of colossal dimensions,” the department said. Originally discovered in 1885 by German archaeologist Max Ohnefalsch-Richter, the site was hastily reburied and its location forgotten, until now.

Excavators working at the Sanctuary of Apollo at Frangissa uncovered more than 100 statue bases and giant stone feet, providing what they describe as definitive proof of “colossal male limestone figures from archaic times.” The department said these finds “fundamentally expand our knowledge of this sacred place.”
Among the recovered artifacts were “completely new types of statues,” Egyptian amulets, marbled glass beads and inscriptions dating back nearly 2,700 years. One inscription even referenced the Ptolemies, rulers of Hellenistic Egypt who once controlled Cyprus.
This isn’t just a breakthrough for historians, it’s a moment where we see archaeology confirming the Bible’s ancient accounts. These newly uncovered “larger-than-life” figures lend physical credibility to such texts and support the idea that past civilizations memorialized real beings of unusual size and power.
As researchers continue their work, they hope to reconstruct the sanctuary’s original architecture and unravel more secrets of its multi-phased use. These towering figures buried beneath centuries of dust may be shouting what Scripture has said all along: the giants were real.
